Cliffside light at Soberanes Trail is the kind that makes everything look bigger. We caught the last hour of sun, with surf breaking on the rocks below and nobody else in the frame.

Next stop was Bixby Bridge, where the cliffs play harder shadows. Different mood entirely from the first spot.

Multi-location shoots are equal parts choreography and improvisation. We mapped the order in advance, but the actual frames came from being patient at each stop until the light cooperated.

Years from now they'll point to one of these frames and remember exactly what the air smelled like that afternoon.
