Bixby Bridge is the most iconic landmark on the Big Sur coast, and I have photographed countless proposals here. This is the full field guide: where you actually stand (hint, not on the bridge), the best light and time of year, the parking and fog reality, and how we keep it safe on an active highway. Plus a link to hundreds of real Bixby proposals so you can see exactly what the spot looks like.

Why Bixby Bridge
Bixby is the image the whole world knows Big Sur by: a slender concrete arch sweeping across a deep canyon with the Pacific stretching out beyond it. As a proposal backdrop it is pure cinema. The scale of the canyon and the coastline behind it makes a photo feel epic without any trick, and it says Big Sur in a single glance. It is one of the most-requested spots we shoot on this stretch of coast.
Where you actually stand (not on the bridge)
This is the key thing people get wrong. You do not propose on the bridge itself; there is no real pedestrian space and Highway 1 traffic makes it unsafe. The shot comes from the north side, at the dirt pullout and the Castle Rock viewpoint, where you look back across the canyon at the full span. That is where we set you, with the arch sweeping behind you and the ocean beyond. We are positioned and ready before you arrive, so you just walk to the spot and have your moment.
The best time of day and year
Golden hour on a clear evening. This is a west-facing coast, so the last hour of light turns the canyon and the bridge warm and the ocean behind it glows. For the year, aim for September and October, when Big Sur gets its clearest skies. Summer afternoons often bring a marine layer that can hide the bridge entirely, so if you are set on Bixby in summer we build in a fog plan and watch the forecast with you.
Parking and getting there
Bixby is about thirteen miles, roughly twenty-five minutes, south of Carmel on Highway 1. Parking is a couple of small dirt pullouts on either end of the bridge plus the Castle Rock viewpoint turnout on the north side. They are limited and they fill up at sunset, so we arrive with a buffer. There are no services out here, no restrooms, no water, so plan ahead. The drive itself is part of the experience, but give yourself margin.
Fog, wind, and the safety reality
Two honest cautions. First, fog: the Big Sur coast can be socked in when Carmel five miles north is sunny, so a clear-day plan and a backup both matter. Second, this is an active highway with fast traffic and narrow shoulders, and the viewpoints are exposed and windy. We handle the positioning so you are never near the roadway or the edge in a bad spot; you focus on the moment, we handle the logistics that make it safe and simple.
The backup plan
If the coast fogs in, we move. Garrapata and Soberanes Trail are just up the road and often clearer, and Carmel Beach or the Carmel Highlands are a short drive north with their own beauty. We watch the forecast with you in the days before and make the call together, so a gray marine layer almost never means a canceled proposal, just a different stunning backdrop.
Make a day of the Big Sur coast
One of the best things about proposing here is what surrounds it. After the yes, we love flowing into a short engagement session while the light is still good, and the drive between Bixby, Garrapata, and the Carmel Highlands strings together several of the most beautiful spots on the coast. A lot of couples turn the proposal into an afternoon on the Big Sur coast, and the photos tell that whole story.
Bixby Bridge proposal FAQ
Can you propose on Bixby Bridge?
Not on the bridge itself; there is no safe pedestrian space and Highway 1 traffic makes it dangerous. The classic proposal shot is from the north side, at the dirt pullout and the Castle Rock viewpoint, looking back at the full span across the canyon. That is where we set you up, safely off the roadway.
Do I need a permit to propose at Bixby Bridge?
No. For a couple with one photographer at the public pullouts, no permit is required. It is Caltrans highway right-of-way, not a fee park.
What is the best time to propose at Bixby Bridge?
Golden hour on a clear evening, when the canyon and the ocean behind the bridge catch warm light. For the clearest skies, aim for September or October; summer afternoons often bring fog that can hide the bridge. We pick a target time with you and keep a backup in case of the marine layer.
What if it is foggy at Bixby?
We move, and we decide together a day or two out. Garrapata and Soberanes Trail just up the road are often clearer, and Carmel Beach or the Highlands are a short drive north. A foggy forecast almost never means a canceled proposal on this coast.
How far is Bixby Bridge from Carmel?
About thirteen miles, or roughly twenty-five minutes, south on Highway 1. There are no services along the way or at the bridge, so we arrive with a buffer and everything we need.
We will plan the timing around the light, handle the positioning on the highway, and capture the moment as it happens. No deposit, you pay after. Weighing other spots? See the best places to propose in Carmel and Big Sur.
