Garrapata is the Big Sur beach that feels like a secret, and it is one of my favorite places on the coast to photograph a proposal. This is the full field guide: how to find the unmarked turnouts, the best light and tides, the surf safety that actually matters here, the spring calla lilies, and where to stand. Plus a link to hundreds of real Garrapata proposals so you can see exactly what the spot looks like.

Why Garrapata Beach
Garrapata is the Big Sur beach that feels like a secret. There is no sign, no parking lot, and no crowd, just towering sea stacks, powerful surf, and a wide stretch of sand reached by a wooden staircase off Highway 1. It is raw and cinematic in a way the easy-access beaches are not, and because so few people find it, a proposal here rarely has an audience. It is our pick for couples who want the coast to feel like it belongs to them.
Finding it (the unmarked turnouts)
This is the part that trips people up. Garrapata State Park has no big entrance sign; access is through numbered gates and dirt turnouts along Highway 1, about eighteen miles south of Carmel. The beach staircase is near Gate 18, and the bluff and Calla Lily Valley are around Gate 19. It is genuinely easy to drive right past, so knowing exactly where to pull off is part of what we handle. We meet you there and you never have to hunt for it.
The best time of day and year
Golden hour, the last hour before sunset, when the low light rakes across the sea stacks and the wet sand glows. For the year, fall gives the clearest skies, and spring brings a bonus: the Calla Lily Valley at the north end erupts in wild white blooms, usually around late winter into spring. Aim for a lower tide near your golden-hour window so there is room on the steep sand and the water is not pushed up against the cliffs.
The surf safety reality
Garrapata is beautiful and it is not gentle. The surf is powerful and sneaker waves, the sudden larger waves that run far up the sand, are a genuine hazard here. We take this seriously: we keep you back from the waterline, we watch the sets, and we pick our positions with the tide in mind. None of it gets in the way of the moment; it just means the person planning your day knows the beach well enough to keep it safe.
The staircase and getting down
The beach is reached by a steep wooden staircase from the bluff. It is short but it is a real set of stairs, worth knowing if anyone is in heels or not up for a climb. Once you are down, the beach opens wide and dramatic. There are no facilities here, no restrooms or water, so we come prepared and plan the timing so you are not rushed on the way down or back up.
Where to stand
Down on the sand with the sea stacks rising behind you is the classic composition, or at the base of the staircase where the beach opens wide and empty. In spring, the calla lilies at the north end make a lush foreground unlike anywhere else on the coast. We are set up and positioned before you arrive, at a natural distance so we blend into the beach, so you just walk to your spot and have your moment.
The fog backup, and pairing spots
If the coast fogs in, we decide together a day or two out. Soberanes Trail is right at the north end of the same park and often reads differently, and Carmel is a short drive north. Garrapata also pairs beautifully with the nearby cliffs and Bixby Bridge for a couple who want to make an afternoon of the Big Sur coast; after the yes, we love flowing into a short engagement session while the light is still good.
Garrapata Beach proposal FAQ
How do you find Garrapata Beach?
It is unmarked. Garrapata State Park is accessed by numbered gates and dirt turnouts along Highway 1, about eighteen miles south of Carmel. The beach staircase is near Gate 18. It is easy to drive past, so we handle knowing exactly where to pull off and meet you there.
Do I need a permit to propose at Garrapata Beach?
No. For a couple with one photographer, roadside parking is free and no permit is required. It is a state park with no entrance booth at the beach turnouts.
Is Garrapata Beach safe?
It is beautiful but the surf is powerful, and sneaker waves are a real hazard here. We take it seriously: we keep you back from the water, watch the sets, and plan around the tide. Knowing the beach is part of what keeps the moment safe and relaxed. The access is also a steep wooden staircase, worth noting for footwear.
When do the calla lilies bloom at Garrapata?
The Calla Lily Valley at the north end typically blooms from late winter into spring. In that window it makes a lush white foreground unlike anywhere else on the coast. Outside of it, the sea stacks and surf carry the scene year-round.
What is the best time to propose at Garrapata?
Golden hour at a lower tide, so there is room on the steep sand and the light rakes across the sea stacks. Fall gives the clearest skies; spring adds the calla lilies. We pick the timing with you and keep a backup in case of fog.
We will find the turnout, time it around the light and the tide, keep it safe near the surf, and capture the moment as it happens. No deposit, you pay after. Weighing other spots? See the best places to propose in Carmel and Big Sur.
