Why Carmel Beach
Carmel Beach is the easy, romantic one, and I mean that as high praise. A crescent of soft white sand at the foot of Ocean Avenue, framed by cypress and facing due west for the sunset. There is no hike, no unmarked turnout, no gate to beat: you park, you walk down, and it is gorgeous. When a couple wants beautiful without the rugged effort of Big Sur, this is where I send them, and it is walkable straight into dinner in town after.
The best time of day and year
Golden hour into sunset, every time. The beach faces due west, so the last hour of light turns the white sand warm and lights up the sky over the water. Carmel gets fog like the rest of the coast, but it clears more reliably than the deep Big Sur beaches, and fall gives the crispest evenings. We pick a target sunset with you and keep an eye on the marine layer in the days before.
Parking and getting there
Carmel Beach sits right at the bottom of Ocean Avenue, the main street through Carmel-by-the-Sea. Parking is free on the street, but the spots near the sand fill up fast at sunset, so we arrive early and grab a spot with time to walk down relaxed. Paths and stairs lead down to the beach from a few points along Scenic Road. It is one of the most accessible beautiful beaches on the whole coast.
Where to stand
On the soft white sand near the water with the cypress and the sunset behind you is the classic composition. The beach is wide, so even at a busy sunset there is room to find a private pocket. We are set up and positioned before you arrive, at a natural distance so we blend right into the beach, so you never have to find us or hit an exact mark. You walk to the water, you have your moment, and the light does the rest.
Make a night of it in town
This is Carmel Beach's secret weapon. Ocean Avenue and the village are a two-minute walk up from the sand, packed with restaurants and wine tasting rooms. A lot of couples propose at sunset and then stroll straight into dinner to celebrate, still glowing. If you want, we flow into a short engagement session on the beach right after the yes while the light is still good, then you are off to dinner. The whole evening comes together in one walkable place.
The wind, the crowd, and the backup
Two small things to plan around. Carmel Beach is popular at sunset, so we arrive early to claim parking and find a quieter stretch of sand, usually toward the south end. And it can get breezy off the water, so bring a layer for after. If a rare socked-in evening rolls in, Carmel Meadows and Point Lobos are minutes south, and we make that call together ahead of time. On this beach, a beautiful sunset is the norm, not the exception.
